Treat Tuesday: Beef Trachea

Beef tracheas are edible dried cow windpipes. They are also known as "moo tubes" and are easily identified by the cartilage rings that make them so delightfully chewy.

These are pretty far up on the gross scale, they're usually pretty greasy and smelly.

Good For: A longer chew session for average chewers. Keeping Brisbane busy for 20+ minutes. Being exciting enough to be worth chewing.

Not Good For: People who mind feeding their dogs recognizable animal parts. Nice carpets. Dogs that swallow things whole.

How Much We Like Them: Enough to buy them occasionally for Briz, but not enough to not exclaim over how disgusting they are every time.

Have you ever given your dog a beef trachea chew?

  1. Hey, Rachel! I actually gave my Bruno his first beef trachea last week and it unfortunately gave him diarrhea... I will try again with another brand and see if that was the issue or not. Normally some natural chews do give him softer stool, like bully sticks and cow ears for example. Lamb ears and pig snouts do not seem to bother him. Maybe it is the beef, or the type of chew, I don't know. Have you ever given dehydrated fish skins? Bruno loves them to bits! :)

    1. Poor Bruno! I think beef tracheas are a lot like bully sticks, so dogs with sensitive tummies may have issues. We got some dehydrated fish skins in our last BarkBox, but haven't tried them yet so they are currently making my cabinet smell like fish. My hospice foster Josie the German shepherd loved crisy cod skins though!

    2. Rachel, I see. Yeah, it may be the beef that he MIGHT have a slight issue with. We will be transitioning to a bison-and-lamb-meal-based food soon, so we'll see how it goes. He has been fine eating samples of beef-based Victor foods though, so he may be ok with it in foods... Fingers crossed!

I can't wait for your review of the fish skins! They truly did some miracles for Bruno's flea-scabbed skin and dull coat that he had when we first got him. Now his skin and coat are super soft, shiny, and amazing! He had a fish skin at least 2-3 times/week, and that, combined with good food, made ALL the difference for him.

P.S. Just want you to know that I regularly follow your posts and love all the work you put in this one and your other website, you go, girl! Briz, Ru, and the fosters must be some happy, healthy, loved dogs!

P.P.S. If you can somehow make it so that we get email notifications or something when anyone responds to our posts, that would be amazing! TIA

    3. The fish skins will probably be the subject of next week's Treat Tuesday. So stinky! Brisbane gets a lot of fish oil, and right now he's also getting some other skin and coat supplements. He's been having skin issues and I'm hoping his hair grows back.

Glad you like the blog! It's been a lot of fun, next month I'll have been doing this for a whole year!

  2. Yay! And hope so too! Raw, unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil topically and internally also helps a lot, I give it to Bruno twice a week. I used to give it every other day, but I found other things to add to his diet to spice it up. :)

And woot woot! I will be looking forward to the 1-year anniversary post of the blog! :)

    2. I believe you have to have a Google+ account to get the 'Notify Me' button. At least, when I am not signed into Google I don't have that option.

    3. Yeah, I'm using Google+. Actually, I'm using a version called Blogger, that doesn't require you to have a regular Google+ account.
